The practice of banking umbilical cord blood isn’t necessarily something new. For years people have been storing their children’s umbilical cord blood for potential use in the future if they need it. When a child uses their own cord blood for treatment, this is called ‘autologous’ use of the cord blood and the FDA has approved autologous treatments for over 80 diseases.
More recently, cord blood has been used in trials and treatments by third-party individuals (non-autologous), meaning by people the cord blood didn’t originate from. The list of conditions that may benefit from this use non-autologous treatments has grown considerably over the years with new uses discovered every year. These non-autologous treatments are not ‘approved’ by the FDA, but regulated by them. The FDA has placed the responsibility of these treatments in the hands of practitioners who make the determination of whether the treatments are safe and clinically useful.
